Full Steam Ahead: Best Steam Cleaners for Car Detailing

From time to time, TTAC will highlight automotive products we think may be of interest to our community. Plus, posts like this help to keep the lights on around here. Learn more about how this works. Every single gearhead reading this enjoys a clean car. Whether we take the time to actually remove life’s various and sundry detritus, well, that’s a different story. We all know people whose engine compartments are tidier than their passenger compartments. Hoovering the carpets and seats only removes so much dirt, as those ads for commercial-grade steam cleaner rentals used to so graphically demonstrate. These days, portable steam cleaners abound, meaning those of us who decide to give our car a really good scrub needn’t venture to the Kroger across town that’s really scary after 4 pm. Keep in mind these units can be used in the house, too, in case your other half is questioning your financial investment on one of these things. Dirt begone! (Editor’s note: As noted above, this post is meant to both help you be an informed shopper for automotive products but also to pay for our ‘90s sedan shopping habits operating expenses. Some of you don’t find these posts fun, but...

At 1 p.m. on Oct. 27, the Annual Community Events Staff (A.C.E.S) and Trinity athlete volunteers

At 1 p.m. on Oct. 27, the Annual Community Events Staff (A.C.E.S) and Trinity athlete volunteers filled Vernon Social, waiting for children to arrive to begin their treat-filled trip down Vernon Street. Although the rain remained constant throughout the day, so did the children who visited Trinity to collect their goodies and parade down Vernon Street with their chaperones. Within the hour of the start, small waves of children came filing in for their afternoon of trick-or-treating. The children made their way to Trinity to enjoy the spirit of Halloween and were not going to let the unfavorable weather get in their way. Halloween on Vernon Street, Trinity’s annual trick-or-treating event, provides children from the surrounding areas with a safe and entertaining afternoon of playing games, collecting candy, and showing off their costumes. Now, after 30 years as an event at Trinity, Halloween on Vernon continues to be a great success each Sunday before Halloween. Director of the Office of Community Service and Civic Engagement Joe Barber hoped the rain wouldn’t keep the kids away. “We’ve been through rain before—we’ve even been through snow before,” he mentioned as he waited for t...

Social amoebae establish a protective interface with their bacterial associates by lectin agglutination

Both animals and amoebae use phagocytosis and DNA-based extracellular traps as anti-bacterial defense mechanisms. Whether, like animals, amoebae also use tissue-level barriers to reduce direct contact with bacteria has remained unclear. We have explored this question in the social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum, which forms plaques on lawns of bacteria that expand as amoebae divide and bacteria are consumed. We show that CadA, a cell adhesion protein that functions in D. discoideum development, is also a bacterial agglutinin that forms a protective interface at the plaque edge that limits exposure of vegetative amoebae to bacteria. This interface is important for amoebal survival when bacteria-to-amoebae ratios are high, optimizing amoebal feeding behavior, and protecting amoebae from oxidative stress. Lectins also control bacterial access to the gut epithelium of mammals to limit inflammatory processes; thus, this strategy of antibacterial defense is shared across a broad spectrum of eukaryotic taxa. Characterizing the effector proteins that host organisms use to manage their microbiota is important for understanding how animals and their resident microbiota coevolve as a “sup...

Dog crate, pliers, choker chain, tie-down strap found inside home where man says he was tortured

A man is accused of kidnapping and assaulting a 22-year-old Cincinnati man while holding him captive in a dog cage. Christopher Edwards appeared in Franklin Municipal Court on Tuesday for a probation violation via video. He flipped off the camera a few times, made lewd hand gestures and said he was going to represent himself for a probation violation if assigned a certain public defender. “If it’s her, then I’ll just go ahead and represent myself, because she sucked,” Edwards told the judge. Edwards appeared in another Warren County courtroom on Monday. When that judge asked how his day had been, Edwards said, “Horrible.” Edwards is charged with kidnapping and assault. According to court documents obtained by WLWT, the victim said he was lured to a home on East Lytle 5 Points Road in Clearcreek Township, where Edwards had been living, by an ex-girlfriend who claimed she was being beaten by a current boyfriend. According to court documents, the victim said he rented a car, drove to the house and “made contact with a subject later known to him as ‘Mongo.’” The victim said Mongo told him to park at the edge of the drivewa...

All 2,493 items targeted by China’s tariffs in US trade war — Quartz

China’s latest tariff retaliation, announced today, will hit some $60 billion in US exports, including hundreds of agricultural, mining, and manufactured products, threatening jobs and profits at companies around the United States.  Before the trade war starts in earnest, China bought about 17% of US agricultural exports and was a major market for other goods, from Maine lobster to Boeing aircraft. It has been the largest market for Apple iPhones since 2016. Since the escalation of tariffs, though, China has stopped buying soybeans and lobsters, and Apple warned it would miss its expected Christmas holiday sales figures because of trade tensions. In addition to the 25% tariffs below, Beijing also added 20% tariffs on 1,078 US products, 10% tariffs on 974 US products, and 5% tariffs on 595 US products (all links in Chinese). The list was translated from China’s ministry of finance press release using Google translate, and may be inexact in spots. Quartz also rearranged some items on the list to group them into categories, and they may not be in the order of their “harmonized tariff schedule” codes.  Gate Valves, Fire Hydrant Castings, Cast Iron Soil Pipe & Fittings, Floor Dra...

How Secure is Your Security Badge? — Krebs on Security

YPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd”> Security conferences are a great place to learn about the latest hacking tricks, tools and exploits, but they also remind us of important stuff that was shown to be hackable in previous years yet never really got fixed. Perhaps the best example of this at last week’s annual DefCon security conference in Las Vegas came from hackers who built on research first released in 2010 to show just how trivial it still is to read, modify and clone most HID cards — the rectangular white plastic “smart” cards that organizations worldwide distribute to employees for security badges. Nearly four years ago, researchers at the Chaos Communication Congress (CCC), a security conference in Berlin, released a paper (PDF) demonstrating a serious vulnerability in smart cards made by Austin, Texas-based HID Global, by far the largest manufacturer of these devices. The CCC researchers showed that the card reader device that HID sells to validate the data stored on its then-new line of iClass proximity cards includes the master encryption key needed to ...

Wittmann Battenfeld Previews New Tech For Composites & Cell Integration : Plastics Technology

Open house in Austria offered a vision of a future with controls linking injection machines to a wide range of auxiliaries. Wittmann also signaled its debut in composite organosheet overmolding—with an added twist. Wittmann 4.0 is a new effort to integrate controls of Wittmann Battenfeld injection machines with all Wittmann auxiliaries, including (at present) TCUs (pictured), robots, blenders, and water-flow controllers. Control screens for these peripherals are integrated in the press controller, which can configure and store setups for auxiliaries as part of the mold setup recipe. Also part of Wittmann 4.0 is the new WiBa QuickLook mobile app that displays operating status of presses and robots. MacroPower Days provided the first public look at Wittmann Battenfeld’s thrust into composite organosheet overmolding. PP/glass sheet blanks were picked from a stack by a robot, preheated in a drawer-type oven, hung on pins in the mold (below), and overmolded into automotive-type demo parts. Preheated organosheet was presented to an infrared camera by the robot, and the thermal profile was displayed (below), using a system from SKZ. At its recent MacroPower Days open house in Kottingbr...

When reading about cool projects and products, it’s common to see wiring plugs labelled “JST connector.”

When reading about cool projects and products, it’s common to see wiring plugs labelled “JST connector.” This looks fine until we start getting hands-on and begin hacking things together. Inevitably we find the JST connector from one part fails to fit in the JST connector of another. This is the moment we learn “JST” is not a connector specification. It is short for Japan Solderless Terminals Manufacturing Company, Ltd. A company whose history goes back to 1957 and their website (styled in 1999) lists hundreds of different types. We can simplify to “JST connector” when chit-chatting about projects. But when it comes to actual hardware specification, that’s not good enough. Which JST connector? The reality is: we live in a world full of ambiguous connector specifications. We also sometimes choose to ignore “No User Serviceable Parts Inside” and merrily explore guts of equipment to which we have no specifications at all. As hackers, we need some skill at deciphering mystery connectors. We’ll start here with a quick survey of the most popular types from JST. A simple two pin wire-to-wire connector is probably the RCY series. When a connector interface two or more wires to a circuit...

The ability to offer high-quality housing helps colleges and universities compete for students. Whether built by academic institutions or private developers, today’s student residences tend to emphasize walkability and interaction, incorporate a mix of uses and a range of sustainable strategies, and integrate more fully with the surrounding city and landscape than the fortress-like dormitories of the 1960s and 1970s. The following 10 projects—all completed during the past five years—include a repurposed hotel, a town hall adapted and expanded into residences and a community theater, student housing complexes combined with maker spaces, contemporary interpretations of traditional neo-Gothic and New England architecture, the first multifamily high-rise in the United States to attain Passive House certification, and one of France’s tallest wooden buildings. At the northeast corner of the University of Chicago’s campus, Pierce Tower residence hall appeared as a 10-story brick box perched on piers, its loading dock presenting an unfriendly face to the intersection of University Avenue and busy 55th Street. With the 1960s edifice showing its age, the school turned to locally based fir...
